Significant overcrowding of teeth occurs when there isn’t enough space in the dental arches to accommodate all the teeth properly. This can lead to teeth being misaligned, rotated, or overlapping. Severe overcrowding can result in various issues, including difficulty in cleaning teeth, increased risk of dental decay and gum disease, as well as aesthetic concerns.

Mild (Before & After)

Moderate (Before & After)

Side-by-side comparison of a person's teeth before and after dental treatment. On the left, the teeth are misaligned and yellow. On the right, the teeth are straightened and white.

Severe (Before)

Severe (After)

Three close-up images of a person's smile showing various stages of dental development with misaligned teeth.

The specific treatment approach for significant overcrowding will depend on factors such as the severity of crowding, the patient’s age, dental and skeletal characteristics, and their treatment goals. Your orthodontist will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to address the individual’s needs effectively.

Diastema closure is an orthodontic procedure aimed at closing gaps or spaces between teeth, particularly noticeable in the front teeth. Diastemas can occur due to various reasons, including discrepancies in tooth size, abnormal frenum attachment, missing teeth, or habits like thumb sucking.

Mild (Before & After)

An underbite, also known as prognathism, is a dental condition where the lower front teeth extend beyond the upper front teeth when the mouth is closed, giving the jaw a protruding appearance. This misalignment can range from mild, where the lower teeth slightly overlap the upper teeth, to severe, where there is a significant gap between the upper and lower teeth. Underbites are often caused by genetic factors, though they can also result from childhood behaviors such as thumb-sucking, extended bottle-feeding, or habits like tongue thrusting. Other contributing factors may include discrepancies in the size or position of the jawbones or teeth. Individuals with an underbite may experience difficulties with biting, chewing, and speaking, as well as jaw pain and uneven tooth wear. Additionally, severe underbites can affect facial aesthetics and lead to self-consciousness. Addressing an underbite can enhance oral functionality, improve dental health, and boost confidence.

An overbite, also known as a deep bite or vertical overlap, is a dental condition where the upper front teeth significantly overlap the lower front teeth when the mouth is closed. This condition can vary in severity, from mild cases where the upper teeth slightly overlap the lower teeth to severe cases where the overlap is so pronounced that the upper teeth completely cover the lower teeth, and in extreme instances, the lower teeth may touch the roof of the mouth. Overbites can result from various factors, including genetics, prolonged thumb-sucking or pacifier use during childhood, or issues with jaw development. Symptoms of an overbite can include difficulty biting or chewing food, speech impediments, jaw pain or discomfort, excessive wear on the lower teeth, and recessed or damaged gums. Correcting an overbite can improve oral function, aesthetics, and overall dental health.

An open bite is a dental condition where the upper and lower teeth do not touch when the mouth is closed, creating a gap or space between them. This misalignment can occur in the front of the mouth, where the front teeth do not meet, or in the back, where the molars fail to make contact. Causes of an open bite include genetic factors, prolonged thumb-sucking or pacifier use during childhood, tongue thrusting (pushing the tongue against the teeth while swallowing or speaking), and abnormal jaw growth. Individuals with an open bite often experience difficulties with biting and chewing food, speech problems such as lisps, and may develop habits like mouth breathing. Additionally, an open bite can affect the overall aesthetics of a person’s smile, leading to self-esteem issues. Addressing an open bite can improve oral function, enhance speech clarity, and contribute to better dental and overall health.

Openbite (Before & After)

A tilted tooth refers to a tooth that is not properly aligned within the dental arch and is angled or leaning in a direction different from the surrounding teeth. This misalignment can occur for several reasons and, if untreated, can contribute to various dental issues, including difficulty in cleaning, increased risk of decay and gum disease, bite problems, and aesthetic concerns.

Case Study

High Cannies

This patient came to Dr. Melina with a complex case of overcrowding and displaced canines. Take a look at how this transformation was completed.

The upper canines are the last teeth to erupt in the top arch, and sometimes there is not enough space for them. As a result, they end up displaced and ‘high up’ in the gum. To treat this condition, we first create space in the dental arch and then gently pull the canines into the correct alignment.

Options Available

Invisalign

Invisalign treatment uses clear, removable aligners, which straighten your smile discreetly. With no wires or brackets, they’re an alternative to conventional fixed braces. Invisalign packages are separated into four categories depending on the complexity of the treatment required. Invisalign Express: Designed for relapse cases that require very minor movement. (Treatment time: 3-4 months) Invisalign Lite: Designed for mild teeth straightening. (Treatment time: up to 9 months) Invisalign Comprehensive: Designed for mild to moderate teeth straightening. (Treatment time: up to 12 months) Invisalign Complex: An advanced treatment designed to address severe orthodontic issues, suitable for severe cases, and includes an unlimited number of aligners with no fixed treatment timeframe.

Buccal fixed braces

Buccal fixed braces, also known as traditional braces, are orthodontic appliances used to straighten and align teeth. Buccal fixed braces consist of metal or ceramic brackets that are bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth and connected by archwires. Buccal fixed braces are highly effective for correcting various orthodontic issues, including crooked teeth, overcrowding, spacing issues, and misaligned bites (e.g., overbite, underbite, crossbite).
